  5. Cytochrome b559  [1]  is an essential component of photosystem II complex from
  6. oxygenic photosynthetic  organisms.  It  is  an  integral  thylakoid  membrane
  7. protein composed of two subunits, alpha (gene psbE) and beta (gene psbF), each
  8. of which  contains  a histidine residue located in a transmembrane region. The
  9. two histidines coordinate the heme iron of cytochrome b559.

  11. The region around the heme-binding residue  of  both  subunits is very similar
  12. and can be used as a signature pattern.
